PlayKiko

Counting Puzzle

A number on one card, a group of friends on another. Find the pair.

In the full version

Number cards for eight, six and nine waiting to be matched with groups of animals

What it is

Numbers from one to ten, each paired with a card showing that many animals. Five monkeys go with the five; one frog goes with the one.

It is the bridge between reciting numbers, which most children can do early, and understanding what the numbers mean, which takes much longer.

How to play

Drag a group of friends onto the number card it matches. A correct pair locks together; a wrong one slides back.

Counting out loud while your child looks is the single most useful thing an adult can do here.

What it builds

This is cardinality — the idea that the last number you say when counting tells you how many there are. Children often recite to ten long before this clicks, and matching quantities to numerals is how it clicks.

Recognising the written digits is a side benefit that arrives on its own after enough rounds.

Ages and pace

Usually a three-year-old game, starting with the small numbers. Two-year-olds can play the one-to-three range and ignore the rest.
