Bead Stacks
Wooden pegs and coloured rings, and a different job every round.
In the full version
What it is
The biggest game in PlayKiko, built as a series of rounds on the same wooden board. Sort the beads by colour. Build a ring pyramid from the biggest down to the smallest. Tell big from small. Copy a pattern. Count out just the right number. Trim a little tree at the end.
Each round uses the same pegs and the same rings, so the child learns the interface once and then meets six different problems with it.
How to play
Pick up a ring and drop it on a peg. It slides down and settles with a soft knock. Only the top ring can be taken off again, exactly as with the wooden toy.
A round completes when its own condition is met — the right colours together, the pyramid in order, the right count on the peg. The arrows move between rounds.
What it builds
The pyramid round is the classic one: ordering five or more rings by size requires comparing each against the rest, which is genuine seriation rather than trial and error.
The colour round builds classification, the pattern round builds sequence memory, and the counting round connects a number to a quantity. Between them they cover most of what early maths actually is at this age.
Ages and pace
The colour and size rounds work from around two. The pattern and counting rounds are generally a three-year-old job. Rounds can be played in any order.
Round after round
Colour, then size, then a pattern to copy, then counting — the same pegs, a new rule each time.
